RUSSIA IN EUROVISION 2004
Julia Savicheva (Юлия Савичева)
«Believe me»
Eurovision 2004 LogoJulia Savicheva dressed in red like turkish flag. Click to enlarge the photo On May 15 Julia Savicheva represented Russian Federation in Eurovision 2004. Young singer performed "Believe Me!" in English. Music was written by her producer Maxim Fadeev. Lyrics by Brenda Loring
Russia was 14th to perform at Eurovision Final! This draw position is very lucky and has a very good record for producing winners - 5 countries won while performing at number 14: Luxembourg in 1961, France in 1969, UK in 1981, Ireland in 1993 and Denmark in 2000.
Russia took 11th place with 57 pts. Julia Savicheva was voted by: Belarus (12 pts), Serbia & Montenegro (1 pts),Cyprus (6), Estonia (8), Finland (4), Greece (2 pts), Israel (6), Lithuania (8), Latvia (10), Ukraine (10).
Here are russian votes: The Ukraine (12 pts), Serbia & Montenegro(10), Turkey (8), Greece (7), Cyprus (6), Croatia (5), France (4), Sweden (3), Iceland (2), UK (1). So results of first russian televoting are the most "correct" & "right" among results from other countries, because the choice of russian viewers is very similar to the final results. Bravo!

Journalists were informed that actually Julia loves Rock-music, and that she is often compared to Avril Lavigne - but "I have nothing in common with her"

Julia's dancers take her up at the beginning of the song. Click to enlarge the photo    14:30 (Turkish time). First Rehearsal. Eurovision performance differs from other usual Savicheva's static performances. Russian ESC act can be described as very athletic and energetic. Kamel Ouali, french choreographer, is in charge of Julia's stage act (he is also behind french performance). Kamel Ouali got in touch with Julia Savicheva thanks to Worldbest.

The new version of "Believe me", which was released a few days ago, features the song with backing vocals. Despite that the stage performance for Saturday does not include any backing vocalists

        Monday, May 10
The second press conference with Julia took place in the afternoon. The Head of Russian Delegation began the session by thanking all the journalists for attending, and hoped that they liked the rehearsals and choreography - as Julia is accompanied on stage by four male gymnastic dancers.
Eurovision 2004 - Julia is relaxing after second press conference. Click to enlarge    The first question the audience asked was whether Julia had thought of acting in films, considering what an attractive woman she is? Savicheva said that she would like very much to make a film, but before that she would have to graduate from the Institute of Art.
At 17, an age when most teenagers like to be away from their parents, what was her relationship with the father, whom she works with? She said her mother plays piano, while her father is a drummer, who accompanies her during tours in Russia, and he takes part in everything she does, and is very supportive, for which she is grateful, but he is also shy and doesn't disturb her movements.
As well as competing in the forthcoming contest, Julia was in the world best contest "World Idol", where although the show was shown around the world, and everything was perfect, the result was disappointing. How would she feel if the Eurovision Song Contest result was not as good as expected? The reply was "I'm ready as for victory and also to fall. I will not be disappointed so much if I fail, because I believe that all that participate in the Eurovision are already a winner!"
Will the single be released in Europe? The Musical Director of their channel felt that it would be inevitable, as they believe the song will be competitive with other songs released this Summer in Europe, he added one little remark, that the song has no Russian version.
Inevitably the contest concluded with Julia required to sing to the audience, she performed a brief few lines from "I will always love you"

17:00 (turkish time). Second rehearsal. The stage show is still very intricate. 4 shirtless male dancers atract everyone's attention. At the start Julia is surrounded by her dancers at the back of the stage as she starts to sing the song and then she is lifted into the centre of the stage by the dancers. During one verse of the song she is standing on the back of one of the dancers.
This was a very strong rehearsal - she had a good voice and has the potential to do well. She might tire out with the choreography but she seems to be fit and able to cope with it.
The videofloor is red pulsating stars with red and gold as stage colours. The backdrop contains lots of golden flames.

Julia Savicheva is giving the interview to Channel One Russia    Julia had a free day. She had a look at the city of Istanbul. And it's known now, that Julia is accompanied by her mum Svetlana Anatolievna only. Her producer Maxim Fadeev and father Stas Savichev stayed in Moscow. Thus Julia is the only esc 04 participant who is without producer at the contest.
Channel One Russia showed the video-report about Julia's preparations for Eurovision. Young russian singer said: "I am quite satisfied with my voice and sound now. But the main thing for me is to get used to this scene. Our acrobatic dances are not very easy and the eurovision 2004 scene is very specific: there are many of "hills" and "lowlands" on it. So we should be very careful while moving on the scene because it's very easy to fall down...".
C1R video-report with extract from 2nd russian rehearsal (stage performance) maybe downloaded here (3,4 Mb).

        Wednesday, May 12
22:00 (Turkish time). Julia will be in Abdi Ipekci Stadium as a viewer of semifinal of Eurovision 2004.

        Thursday, May 13
Eurovision
Channel One Russia showed the video report about semifinal results and about life of russian delegation and Julia Savicheva in Istanbul on Thursday.

Every person in russian delegation is very optimistic. But their optimism is self-controlled, because they do not want to let every piece of luck go away. Yuriy Askiuta, the chief of C1R musical department said: "This year the athmosphere is a bit different from last year one. And if I were the main trainer and valued it, I would valued it at the best mark. The result of our performance is not the main for us after such a good athmospehe. But anyway we will do our best!".

Eurovision 2004 Russia - Julia's make-up.
The image of russian singer Julia Savicheva is created every morning in the hotel appartment. Famous stylist Alexandr Shevchuk told about the main idea of Julia's make-up. So Savicheva's image is the minimum of cosmetics and the maximum of naturalness. It's very hard work for Julia as before eurovision 2004 she didn't use cosmetics at all. This make-up idea is the russian answer to euro-standart. Europe has popular divas in "sexy" style, but Russia will be represented by young schoolgirl in jeans and with the guitar. But two weeks before the contest producers decided that Russian performance should be more dynamic. The guitar was replaced by difficult choreography.

Eurovision 2004 Russia - Julia Savicheva with her dancers    Now the stage performance features Julia Savicheva and four dancers from France. The only way they understand each other is expression of their faces and gestures. Because Julia doesn't speak french and dancers from France know English just a little.
When Julia Savicheva has a look at the city of Istanbul, it's not a simple walk because she is accompanied by a lot of people. Tiny girl Julia complains that she can hardly see the city because she is always surrounded by giants from security and photographers. But her security complans also: russians in the city are such one big show. They always gather a lot of listeners and viewers. So improvisation in the center of Istanbul is a rehearsal also.
The only things, Julia is not allowed to do during Eurovision week, are eating ice-cream and talking mobile phone. Eurovision 2004 Russia - Julia Savicheva sings in Consulate palace

Download C1R video-report about semifinal results and life of russian delegation in Istanbul here (3,4 Mb). Eurovision 2004 Russia - russian party in Consulate palace. Click photo to enlarge

In the evening Russian party was held in the Consulate, a huge, extravagant palace. It seemed to be very formal. The party was a real downer, there were not that many people there, and well, the Palace was not where they should have held the party. Julia sang a couple of her other songs and that was it.

Click image to enlarge    Julia's dress was created by Seredin & Vasiliev, russian born fashion designers who work in France now. For the contest 2 variants of costumes were made: close fitting trousers and transparent blouses in black and in white. White dress was left in Moscow, Julia forgot it at home. So young singer will be in black one on the ESC scene.
It's said that the vocal is shakey. The dancing is too much and is distracting. Some new camera angles are making you focus on the dancing and not the song. Julia Savicheva & Eurovision 2004. Interesting facts from official sources.
Eurovision 2004 Russia Different versions of "Believe me": This moment Monolit Records, Maxim Fadeev and Julia by herself do not plan to record and release russian, instrumental or remix versions of "Believe Me". At Eurovision full english language version will be sang.

Who is Brenda Loring (the "Believe Me" lyricist)?: She is native russian author and very famous person, who uses pseudonym "Brenda Loring" for all her english lyrics.

The Stage performance: The most part of stage performance will be static. Additional effects or "wild dances" won't be used, because in producer's opinion song "Believe Me" by itself can impress the audience and open its beauty by means of words and melody. Julia Savicheva will just share eurovision scene with the guitarist, double bass guitarist, drummer and keyboard player. But this guestion is still under discussion.

"Believe me" video-clip: Video was filmed in concert tv-studio "Ostankino" just after reality show "Fabrika Zvyozd-4" on the 20th of March, friday. The shooting was headed by one of the leading director of Channel One Russia concert shows. His name is Andrey Boltenko. Post-production was held in Timur Bekmambetov studio. The video was sent to EBU to be used as preview. It's likely that new video for rotation on TV stations will be filmed.

Julia Savicheva Eurovision 2004 Russia Julia and Maxim Fadeev's expectations from ESC? They are proud that they were chosen to be russian representatives in ESC 04 and they will do their best to reach the highest place ever. And of course, they have dreams of winning Eurovision. Julia by herself feels, that she is responsible to the country for the strong performance.

Single "Believe Me": Single will be released in Russia by Monolit Records. The release date and other tracks are not known yet. Also the single is planned to be released in European Union, but it will depent on success and popularity of "Believe Me" and Julia Savicheva.

Will Julia Savicheva sing "Believe Me" at Eurobest (Worldbest)? No, she won't. Song "Believe Me" was written specially for Eurovision and won't be performed on any contests before the ESC.

Info on "Believe Me" promotion: Eurovision is great event for promotion by itself. Leading record companies, labels and producers will be at the contest. Therefore, it is planned to promote Julia as talented singer during eurovision events. And a lot of promo-materials are planned to be produced.

The biography.
Eurovision 2004       Julia Savicheva was born on 14 February 1987 in Kurgan (small city in Ural region) in musicians family. Music is definitely in the 17-year-old’s blood. Both Julia’s parents are musicians. After graduating from music school, her mother worked as a music school teacher for 12 years. Her father Stas Savichev is an excellent drummer; now he accompanies Julia.
Her first appearence on big scene happened when she was 4 years old. Russian popular rock group "Агата Кристи" (Agatha Christie) gave its perfomance and Julia decided to help them with dance improvisation. Spectators were deeple impressed by emotional dance of this young girl.

Eurovision 2004       Since 5 years old Julia became a member of children's choreograpic group "Svetlyachok" (Fire-Fly). Despite she was the youngest in that collective, Savicheva was chosen to be the soloist of group soon.
In her 6 Julia with parents moved to Moscow. In Russian Capital Julia spent all her spare time at her mum's working place - The Palace of Culture "MAI" - and associated with other musicians and choreographers constantly. In that Palace of Culture there was student's theatre "Faust". And its head R.A.Polejko noted such talented child as Julia Savicheva and soon little girl played main part in New-Year's concerts and got her first money for it.

Julia Savicheva       7 years old Julia has got no free time at all as she played and had rehearsals in the theatre, studied in school and in choreographical collective "Zhuravushka" (Yong Crane). Becides that L.Azadanova (known teacher of ball-room dances) noted Julia also and offered girl to dance in her group. Soon Savicheva & her dance partner became Moscow champions in their age group 2 times.
Eurovision 2004       Julia associated with musicians constantly and listened to music a lot, so it's clear that she tried her in singing. She liked to perform songs of Tony Braxton and Whitney Houston and everybody, who heard her singing, was impressed deeple by her beautiful and strong vocal.
In 1996 Julia took part in recording of album "VORONA" (The Crow) with famous russian singer Linda. Julia sang part of children's back vocal in several song. It should be mentioned, that Linda's producer name is Max Fadeev, who also was born in Kurgan and was familiar with Julia's father.
In 2001 the head of student's theatre "Faust" R.A. Polejko offered, that Julia should play main part in original New-Year's concerts in The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow. This perfomance became the most visited and popular New-Year's concert in the Capital of Russia. In 2002 Julia was offered a role in this performance and she played main part of "Pozyomka" again. Julia took part in all 40 concerts of that show.
Savicheva - Eurovision 2004       On 7th of March 2003 new Julia Savicheva reached new horizont in her musical career. She became a member of "Fabrika Zvyozd-2" project on Channel One Russia. "Fabrika Zvyozd" is russian analog of "Fame Academy" and "Operacion Triunfo". And producer of this show (and so Julia's producer) was ... Max Fadeev. Despite Savicheva was not even top 3 in "Fabrika Zvyozd" she was the 1st from show to enter many charts. Her song "Visoko" (High) became a big hit in Russia.
In the beginning of 2004 Julia was chosen to be russian representative in WorldBest because of her success. It's known, that she will perform "Torn" which was a hit of Natalie Imbruglia.
Despite touring constantly all over Russia and CIS with "Fabrika Zvyozd-2" project, Julia pays special attention to her self-education as this year she graduates school. In this summer Savicheva plans to enter the Theatre Institute (GITIS) and to study the art of acting or the choreography.
Julia likes dancing, singing, painting and eating sweets... Also she is fond of choral singing.
One of Julia’s favourite movies is "Leon" by Luc Besson, a fact which explains why she’s been nicknamed ‘Matilda’ since her school days.
Julia has many fans and this autumn she’s planning to produce her first album.

Lyrics

"Believe Me"
(original english lyrics)
music by Maxim Fadeev, lyrics by Brenda Loring

Believe me, I just don’t care
If you look away or stare,
If you choose to go or stay...
Don’t believe me, I pray!

In my head – every day, everywhere – m-m-m, no
You and I can talk, and I sound colder.
In my heart, though I say I don’t care,
I just cry and cry on your big shoulder.

Believe me, I just don’t care
If you look away or stare,
If you choose to go or stay...
Don’t believe me, I pray!

Believe me, I just don’t care
If you look away or stare,
If you choose to go or stay...
Don’t believe me, I pray!

Far away, like the man in the moon, (my dear!)
You just wave to me, you are always lying.
Every face, every voice, every tune
Brings you back to me, and I start crying!

Believe me, I just don’t care
If you look away or stare,
If you choose to go or stay...
Don’t believe me, I pray!

Believe me, I just don’t care
If you look away or stare,
If you choose to go or stay...
Don’t believe me, I pray!

Believe me, I just don’t care...

"Зачем жe ты веришь мне?!"
(russian lyrics - unoff.)
(cyrillic font)
lyrics by Nikolai Galanoff

"Zachem zhe ti verish mne?!"

(translit)

Zachem zhe ti verish mne,
Sgaraya v mayom agne?
I bol' ya v glazakh prachtu
Ti ni ver' mne, prashu…

Misli nezhniye byutsya v dushe - oh, net!
Golos tvoy zvuchit - moy zamirzayit
I lyubov-nelyubov' ni zazhech!
Na grudi ana, kak ten' ridaet

Zachem zhe ti verish mne,
Sgaraya v mayom agne?
I bol' ya v glazakh prachtu

Zachem zhe ti verish mne,
Sgaraya v mayom agne?
I bol' ya v glazakh prachtu
Ti ni ver' mne, prashu…

V kazhdam svuki ya chustvuyu noch - moy mir
V svete sontza ti bissledna taish
Moy abman unisyot veru proch - mmm
Kak mirazh ya zdes' - ti ischizaish

Zachem zhe ti verish mne,
